New York Jets Release Thomas Jones

The running back for the New York Jets league-leading rushing offense Thomas Jones will be released when the free agency period begins on Friday.

Jones had a franchise record 14 TDs last season and picked up 1,402 rushing yards, but he was eclipsed in the playoffs by rookie Shonn Greene and at 31 years of age was clearly expendable.

Cold though it may seem, a lot of credit for the Jets success running the ball belongs to their offensive line which includes players like Alan Faneca, D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold.

The Jets should be able to find a veteran running back similar to Jones for significantly less money and, behind that offensive line, the veteran should be able to tack on an extra year or two to their career as they mentor Greene.

Veterans like Jamal Lewis, LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Westbrook are all available and could be had for cheap once the market for free agent backs narrows.
